“Temporary Protected Status” Extended for El Salvador
The Department of Homeland Security extended Temporary Protected Status (“TPS”) for El Salvador for a period of 18 months, effective March 10, 2015 through September 9, 2016.
Current eligible El Salvador TPS beneficiaries can re-register under the extension during the 60-day re-registration period of January 7, 2015 through March 9, 2015.
For TPS re-registrants, employment authorization documents (“EAD”), or “work permits,” with present expiration dates of March 9, 2015, are automatically extended and valid through September 9, 2015.
Tips for Workers Who Have El Salvador TPS Status:
Make sure to re-register no later than March 9, 2015.
Should an Employer seek to reverify a TPS beneficiary’s work authorization documents after March 9, 2015 and the TPS beneficiary timely re-registered but has not yet received his new work permit, the TPS worker should provide a copy of his EAD and a copy of the Federal Register notice, found here for purposes of satisfying I-9 requirements.
Should an Employer refuse to allow a TPS beneficiary to work despite having timely re-registered for TPS, contact your Union representative, labor or immigration counsel.
