California Labor Commissioner’s track record speaks for itself

A recent report, the “State of the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement,” evaluates labor law enforcement activity by the California Labor Commissioner’s office in the first two years under the Brown Administration lead by Labor Commissioner Julie A. Su.  The report makes the following findings:

  • In 2012, over $3 million in unpaid minimum wages assessed, representing an increase of 462% from 2010.

  • In 2012, over $13 million in unpaid overtime wages assessed, representing an increase of 642% from 2010.

  • In 2012, over $51 million in civil penalties assessed against employers violating labor laws, more than any previous year in a decade.

  • In 2012, over $25 million in wages assessed and civil penalties issued on public works projects, representing the highest amount since 2002.

This Labor Commissioner’s office continues to act as a worthy partner in the labor movement, and pursuing such claims with the Labor Commissioner, a viable option in labor’s tool box.
