ANNOUNCEMENT: Waiting for your Unemployment Insurance payment?

Based on computer glitches and high unemployment rates, the California Employment Development Department (“EDD”) currently has a backlog of about 73,000 claims to process that are more than 10 days old.  To help ease the delay for those waiting for benefits, the Labor and Workforce Development Agency has instructed the EDD to start paying claims before it verifies on-going eligibility.

Any overpayments will be dealt with later.  In other words, if it is later determined the claimant was not actually eligible for the benefit received, he will be expected to repay the EDD the amount he was overpaid.  This strategy will get much relied-upon money to individuals faster.  Backlogged payments are predicted to be sent out beginning today, Thursday, September 26, 2013.
