Governor Sandoval Stops Medicaid-for-All in Nevada
On August 25, 2017, Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval vetoed legislation that would have offered state-sponsored health insurance to any resident of Nevada, regardless of income. Nevada would have been the first state to offer Medicaid-for-all. Nevada’s Democratic-controlled legislature passed the bill in response to Republican efforts on the national level to gut the Affordable Care Act. The Nevada Care Plan would have been offered on the health care exchange as a public option along with the current array of private insurance options. Although a so-called moderate Republican, Governor Sandoval’s veto essentially denies affordable health care to thousands of Nevadans.
This veto is a painful reminder of how much damage one person, a Governor in this case, can do to thousands of people.
