Apprenticeship Funding Restored in New State Budget

Governor Jerry Brown signed a new state budget that restored funding for apprenticeship programs and provided additional funding for new and expanding programs throughout California. In the 2007-2008 Budget, apprenticeship funding was cut by 50% for programs funded through the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office and cut by 20% for programs then funded through the Department of Education due to the State’s fiscal crisis. Those reduced funding levels remained in place until now.

In part due to the advocacy of jointly-managed Union apprenticeship programs, the Governor signed a Budget that restored the funding to the levels before the 2007 cuts, and provided an increase of $29.1 million to expand apprenticeship programs in California, including $14.1 million to grow existing programs and $15 million to create new programs in emerging industries.
