California state employees with military service-related disabilities gain extra paid sick leave under SB 221

SB 221 is the California Wounded Warriors Transitional Leave Act.  The law adds paid sick leave for employees of the state hired on or after January 1, 2016 with a military service-related disability rated at 30% or more by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs.  In addition to any other paid sick leave he or she receives as a state employee, these military veteran employees will receive an additional credit for sick leave with pay of up to 96 hours for the purpose of treatment of the military service-connected disability.

The additional paid sick leave is credited on the first day of employment and remains available for the following 12 months of employment.  Unused credit does not carry over after the 12-month period.
